Texas LODD Task Force - A Mission of Support and Remembrance

In the heart of Texas, a dedicated team of volunteers works tirelessly to support the families of fallen first responders. The Texas Line of Duty Death (LODD) Task Force is a nonprofit organization committed to providing critical assistance to those who have lost loved ones in the line of duty. Their mission is not just about offering immediate support, but also about ensuring long-term care and honoring the legacy of these brave men and women.

Understanding the Mission

In 1997, after Founder and President, Wendy Norris suffered a career ending injury while fighting a structure fire, she started an organization to support injured first responders online. That organization was officially organized under the IRS as Firefighter Ministries. In early 2001 the Texas Line of Duty Death Response Team was officially formed under the guidance of Firefighter Ministries, the SFFMA, and the State Fire Marshal's Office.

In 2006, The Task Force presented their information to the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation, where they helped provide guidance on developing similar programs in other states.  The Texas Line of Duty Death Response Team was one of the first official response teams in the United States. It was established to address a vital need within our communities. When a first responder falls, the impact on their family and colleagues is profound. The Task Force steps in to offer emotional, financial, and logistical support during these trying times. Their comprehensive approach includes immediate response teams, ongoing counseling services, financial aid, and organizing memorial services.

Immediate Response and Support

One of the core functions of the Texas LODD Task Force is its immediate response capability. Upon notification of a line of duty death, the Task Force mobilizes to provide support to the affected family and department. This includes assistance with funeral arrangements, travel logistics for family members, and ensuring that all necessary benefits are accessible. The goal is to alleviate as much stress as possible during the initial shock and grief.

Long-term Assistance

The commitment of the Texas LODD Task Force extends well beyond the immediate aftermath. They understand that the journey of grief and adjustment is long and complex. To this end, they offer ongoing counseling services for families and departments, ensuring that mental health support is available for as long as needed. They also assist families in navigating the often complex process of securing long-term benefits and financial support.

Honoring the Fallen

The Task Force also places a strong emphasis on honoring the legacy of fallen first responders. They organize annual memorial events and participate in national remembrance ceremonies. These activities serve to remind the community of the sacrifices made by these brave individuals and ensure that their contributions are never forgotten.
